Alfa Romeo Canguro: The Giugiaro coupé that never reached production
The Alfa Romeo Canguro, a unique coupé designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, remains a notable piece of automotive history. Built on the lightweight TZ tubular chassis, the vehicle featured a sinuous fastback design with a ‘Kamm-back’ tail, an aerodynamic concept inspired by Wunibald Kamm.
Alfa Romeo commissioned Bertone to design the bodywork, competing against Pininfarina for the production contract. Although Bertone won the design competition, the Canguro never entered mass production. This was due to Autodelta’s inability to launch series production and a collision involving a Bertone prototype during a commercial shoot at Monza, which made repairs prohibitively expensive.
After being left abandoned, the prototype was eventually rescued by an American teacher in Germany and later acquired by Japanese collector Shiro Kosaka.
