Alfa Romeo rejects trend of oversized vehicle displays
Alfa Romeo is distancing itself from the automotive industry trend of increasingly large digital screens, prioritizing driver focus and minimalist interior design. Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, the brand's design chief, criticized the current “war of centimetres” regarding screen sizes, arguing that massive displays can compromise dashboard creativity and become costly, obsolete liabilities.
The company’s design philosophy is showcased in the Cuorerosso concept car, which features the “Cannocchiale Vivente” (Living Binoculars) system. This reimagined instrument cluster uses two circular displays that can merge into a single, seamless screen to show only essential driving information, reducing distractions.
To maintain tactile control, the brand is emphasizing the retention of physical buttons and dials for primary functions like climate control. This approach aims to create an emotional, driver-centric cockpit rather than a “driving smartphone,” ensuring technology serves the driver without overwhelming the driving experience.
