Alfeu Cuna Sworn in as New Governor of Mozambique's Gaza Province

Margarida Mapandzene Chongo resigned after roughly six years as governor of Gaza Province in southern Mozambique, citing personal and professional reasons while denying involvement in alleged corruption cases. The Provincial Assembly of Gaza held an extraordinary session, accepted her resignation, declared her permanently impeded, and confirmed Alfeu Constantino Cuna as her successor.

Alfeu Cuna, a jurist who previously led the provincial commission on decentralised governance and served in various administrative roles, was nominated by the Frelimo Political Commission. He was sworn in by the President of the Republic in Maputo on Friday at 14:00. Cuna said he will present his governance priorities after the ceremony. The appointment ends the first chapter of a political crisis that began in June with the dismissal of the provincial committee and district committees.
