Alfonso Fanjul, Cuban‑American Sugar Tycoon, Dies at 89

Alfonso "Alfy" Fanjul Gómez‑Mena, the Cuban‑American entrepreneur who rebuilt his family’s sugar empire in Florida after exile, died on Monday in Palm Beach at age 89. He co‑founded Florida Crystals with his brother José "Pepe" Fanjul, which grew into a leading U.S. sugar producer and later became part of the ASR Group that owns brands such as Domino Sugar.

Fanjul also served as co‑chairman and co‑CEO of Central Romana Corporation in the Dominican Republic, guiding the company for more than four decades and expanding its agro‑industrial and tourism operations across the Caribbean. His leadership left a lasting impact on the sugar sector in both the United States and the Dominican Republic, as well as on philanthropic and civic life in Palm Beach.
