Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio calls for rapid launch of Matese National Park

Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, President of the UniVerde Foundation and former Minister of the Environment, is calling for the rapid operationalization of the Matese National Park in Italy. He urged institutions, including the Ministry of the Environment and the regions of Campania and Molise, to overcome obstacles and approve park regulations to avoid prolonged uncertainty.

Pecoraro Scanio emphasized the need to distinguish between constructive feedback from local communities and opposition from those who may benefit from unregulated activities. He noted that the establishment of the park is a strategic step toward Italy’s national goal of protecting 30% of its territory by 2030.

Beyond biodiversity conservation, the initiative is framed as an economic driver for Italy’s internal areas. Pecoraro Scanio highlighted that the mere announcement of the park has already boosted tourism, particularly in hiking and environmental activities. He argued that such protected areas can combat depopulation by fostering sustainable tourism and a green economy.
