Alfonso Rodríguez resigns as Spanish Government delegate in Balearic Islands
Alfonso Rodríguez has announced his resignation as the Spanish Government's delegate in the Balearic Islands. Rodríguez stated that the decision is intended to allow him to focus entirely on his upcoming candidacy for the mayoralty of Calvià in the May 2027 elections.
His departure occurs amid ongoing tensions regarding his management of security forces. Rodríguez previously faced criticism from sectors of the National Police and Civil Guard following his public questioning of police conduct during a July protest against tourism saturation. He had called for urgent reports to determine responsibilities regarding the police response, a move that caused significant friction with security agents.
Rodríguez, who served as the mayor of Calvià from 2015 to 2023, noted that both his current role and his future political ambitions require full and exclusive dedication. It remains unclear who will succeed him in the government delegation.
