Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín, former Mayor of Seville, dies at 69

Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín, the former Mayor of Seville, has passed away at the age of 69 following a long illness and complications from a stroke suffered in 2023. He served three consecutive terms as mayor between 1999 and 2011, making him the longest-serving mayor of the city since the 19th century.

A physician by training, Monteseirín was a prominent figure in Andalusian politics, also serving as President of the Provincial Council of Seville and as a special delegate for the Seville Free Zone. He is widely credited with the modern transformation of Seville, overseeing major urban projects such as the pedestrianization of the city center, the implementation of the tramway and bike lanes, and the construction of the Metropol Parasol, commonly known as ‘Las Setas’.

Political leaders, including Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Andalusian President Juanma Moreno, have paid tribute to his legacy. They described him as a visionary municipalist and a dedicated public servant who worked to make Seville a more modern, sustainable, and competitive city.
