Alfredo Stroessner's son seeks inheritance in Brazilian court

Henrique Alfredo Fleitas, the son of former Paraguayan dictator Alfredo Stroessner, has filed a lawsuit in Brazil's Federal District Court to claim a portion of his father's estate. After Stroessner died in 2006 and was buried in Brasília, a court‑ordered exhumation confirmed through DNA testing that Fleitas is his biological son.

The court ruled that Fleitas has standing to pursue the inheritance, rejecting a previous challenge by Stroessner’s daughter. The estate is believed to be worth billions of reais and is scattered across several jurisdictions, including Switzerland, the United States, Brazil and Paraguay. The Brazilian court affirmed its competence to adjudicate assets located in Brazil even though the deceased and heirs reside abroad. The inheritance process is expected to conclude within the next two years.
