Algarve desalination plant construction enters major execution phase

Construction of the Algarve Seawater Desalination Plant (EDAM) in Albufeira has entered a significant material execution phase, with work occurring simultaneously on land and at sea. According to Águas do Algarve, the project has moved past the initial stages of design, environmental assessment, and licensing.

The main construction and commissioning phase is expected to continue until early 2028. Following this, a period of pre-start-up and installation initialization will take place to verify system performance and contractual compliance. This final phase of testing and startup is projected to last until early 2029.

Completed works include onshore pipelines for raw water supply and brine discharge, as well as seafront signage. Current efforts are focused on constructing the various buildings that will comprise the site, including connecting pipelines, a degassing chamber, and a pumping station.
