Algarve expands wine tourism and cross‑border trail attractions

The Algarve region in southern Portugal is promoting enotourism with seven wineries across towns such as Lagoa, Lagos, Albufeira, Silves and Loulé. Highlights include Quinta dos Vales, a 44‑hectare estate producing about 150,000 bottles annually and offering a "Winemaker Experience" where visitors craft their own wine; Monte da Casteleja, which focuses on organic, sustainable production and premium tastings; and Quinta do Canhoto, a family‑run estate since 1875 that offers guided tours, wine tastings, brunches, multi‑course paired dinners and live music.

The interior of the Algarve also features nature trails that link historic villages and the Guadiana River border with Spain. In Alcoutim, a ferry connects to Sanlúcar de Guadiana and the world’s only cross‑border zip line provides a 720‑metre cable crossing. The area also offers a river beach, canoe centre and a network of long‑distance routes such as the Grande Rota do Guadiana (GR15) and the Via Algarviana (GR13), which traverse hills, wetlands and cultural sites. Themed paths like the Rota dos Contrabandistas recreate historic smuggling routes, adding adventure and heritage to the hiking experience.
