The Algarve region is being highlighted as one of Europe’s most picturesque areas, offering diverse landscapes that extend beyond well-known tourist hubs like Albufeira and Lagos.

In the Sotavento region, the Ria Formosa natural park features several notable islands. Ilha Deserta (also known as Barreta) is noted for its extensive sands, birdwatching opportunities in protected dunes, and a sense of isolation accessible by boat from Faro. Ilha de Tavira is also recognized for its beauty, with access points including boat trips to Praia da Ilha de Tavira and a tourist train connecting to Praia do Barril.

The coastline is characterized by a variety of geological formations, including the rock structures of Ponta da Piedade in Lagos. While the region faces challenges from coastal erosion due to limestone and sandstone fragility, it maintains extensive hiking trails. The local culture is further defined by its culinary traditions, particularly the high consumption of salted cod (bacalhau), and a mix of traditional fishing villages and modern resorts.
