Algarve International Circuit to host Formula 1 in 2027

The Algarve International Circuit in Portimão, Portugal, is set to return to the Formula 1 calendar for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. The agreement, signed in London between Formula 1, the Portuguese government, and circuit administration, sees the Portuguese venue replace the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.

Zandvoort will exit the calendar following the 2026 season due to financial risks. Unlike most Grand Prix events that receive direct state support, the Dutch race was funded entirely by private entities, including SportVibes and TIG Sports, with an annual budget of approximately 70 million euros. The promoters cited the high financial risk of continuing, noting that profitability depends heavily on high ticket sales.

The Portimão circuit, known for its altitude changes and technical curves, previously hosted races in 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic. The return to the schedule is expected to bring significant tourism to the Algarve region, with projections suggesting up to 200,000 visitors over a three-day period.
