Algarve tourism shifts focus from visitor volume to experience quality

The Algarve region is undergoing a shift in its tourism model, moving from a focus on visitor volume to a focus on the quality of the experience. While traditional indicators like the number of guests and overnight stays remain important, recent data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) suggests a maturing market.

In June 2026, tourist accommodation recorded 3.1 million guests and 8.1 million overnight stays, representing modest year-on-year growth of 1% and 0.7%, respectively. Although overnight stays by non-residents decreased by 0.6%, total revenue rose by 4.7% to over 785 million euros.

To maintain competitiveness, experts suggest the region must evolve by integrating accommodation, dining, nature, culture, and sustainability into a cohesive visitor experience. This transition aims to differentiate the destination in an increasingly comparable global market.
