Algarve waste management project could see 300 million euro investment

The PSD Algarve has expressed support for a major structural plan to address urban waste management in the Algarve region. The initiative, announced by Minister of Environment and Energy Maria da Graça Carvalho, involves a potential investment of up to 300 million euros to develop long-term solutions for waste treatment and recovery.

The Algarve produces approximately 400,000 tons of waste annually, much of which is currently sent to landfills. Existing facilities in Loulé and Portimão are nearing capacity. The proposed solution aims to reduce landfill dependency and could include energy recovery from non-recyclable materials, with a target operational date of 2034.

The Portuguese Environment Agency is expected to launch a tender on October 15 to study technological options and potential locations for the new unit. Local municipalities are expected to participate in the decision-making process.
