Algeciras Mayor José Ignacio Landaluce to resign amid sexual assault allegations

José Ignacio Landaluce, the mayor of Algeciras, has announced his resignation effective October 25. This decision follows allegations of sexual assault involving two female party members and a motion of censure filed by twelve People's Party (PP) councilors and four Vox councilors.

Landaluce has denied all accusations, describing them as “absolutely and rotundly false” and part of an orchestrated “setup.” Despite his resignation, the scheduled motion of censure for October 28 will proceed to formalize the leadership change. Jacinto Muñoz, currently the first deputy mayor, is the proposed successor.

The political crisis has caused a rift within the PP, with several councilors facing disciplinary proceedings for supporting the motion. Meanwhile, the PSOE has called for an investigative commission to determine if public resources were used to cover up the alleged misconduct.
