Algeciras Mayor Landaluce faces motion of censure amid sexual assault allegations

Algeciras Mayor José Ignacio Landaluce is facing a severe political crisis following two sexual assault allegations filed by female members of the Partido Popular (PP). In response to these complaints, the provincial leadership of the PP in Cádiz has withdrawn its support and demanded Landaluce's immediate resignation.

Twelve of the fifteen councilors in the municipal government have formally resigned their executive responsibilities, leaving Landaluce politically isolated. While the councilors remain part of the municipal body, they have abandoned the government team to follow party discipline. The PP has also threatened disciplinary proceedings against any councilors who refuse to support the demand for resignation.

To resolve the institutional crisis, the PP has registered a motion of censure to replace Landaluce. Jacinto Muñoz, the former first deputy mayor, has been named as the candidate to succeed him. The motion is expected to receive support from the four councilors of Vox and the PSOE, which has expressed its willingness to support the transition to restore institutional normality. A vote on the motion is anticipated for late October.
