Algeciras Mayor José Ignacio Landaluce to resign amid sexual assault allegations

José Ignacio Landaluce, the mayor of Algeciras, has announced his resignation effective October 25, following allegations of sexual assault and abuse filed by two women. The legal proceedings have led to a significant political crisis within the Partido Popular (PP), with twelve municipal councilors breaking ties with Landaluce to support a motion of censure.

The motion of censure, supported by members of the PP and Vox, is scheduled for October 28, with Jacinto Muñoz positioned as the candidate for Mayor. Landaluce has denied all accusations, describing them as “absolutely and categorically false” and part of an organized setup. As a symbolic gesture, he intends to hand over the mayoral baton to the Cristo de Medinaceli upon his departure.

The crisis has implications beyond the local government, potentially affecting the balance of power in the Cádiz Provincial Council, where the PP and PSOE are currently tied. Internal reports suggest that party leadership had received warnings regarding Landaluce’s conduct as early as 2022, but no formal action was taken until the recent judicial summons.
