Spanish political parties navigate local election uncertainties

Political developments are unfolding across several Spanish municipalities ahead of the 2027 elections. In Algeciras, the Partido Popular (PP) of Andalusia faces uncertainty regarding its mayoral candidate. The party has yet to decide whether to support current mayor Juan Ignacio Landaluce, who left the party in late 2025 following a PSOE complaint regarding alleged sexual harassment—a complaint that was later dismissed by the Supreme Court Prosecutor's Office. PP Secretary General Antonio Repullo stated the party will not rush decisions, aiming to “get it right” as they weigh Landaluce's electoral strength against the controversy.

In Jaén, Carlos Alberca has launched a primary campaign to challenge the current mayor and Secretary General, Julio Millán, for the PSOE leadership. Alberca argues for a return to “social democratic municipal policy,” criticizing current trends toward privatization and public-private partnerships.

In Guadalajara, PSOE provincial secretary Pablo Bellido has criticized the dual role of the President of the Aguas del Sorbe Mancomunidad, who also serves as a member of Canal de Isabel II. Bellido characterized this as a “trap” that could prioritize Madrid's water needs over the interests of Guadalajara's agriculture and industry.

Additionally, in Almonte, Macarena Robles has been confirmed as the PSOE candidate for the mayoralty, focusing her platform on the needs of Almonte, El Rocío, and Matalascañas.
