Algeciras Mayor José Ignacio Landaluce summoned to testify in sexual assault case

José Ignacio Landaluce, the mayor of Algeciras, has been summoned to testify as an investigated party before a court of violence against women on October 23 regarding alleged sexual assault offenses. The legal proceedings follow complaints from two female members of the Partido Popular (PP), adding to previous allegations that had already led Landaluce to leave the party in late 2025.

The political fallout has been significant, as twelve of the fifteen PP councilors in Algeciras have withdrawn their support and demanded his immediate resignation. A motion of censure, supported by Vox and potentially the PSOE, has been registered and is scheduled for debate on October 28. If successful, Jacinto Muñoz, the first deputy mayor, is expected to replace Landaluce.

Landaluce has maintained his innocence, accusing his own party of political condemnation without respecting the presumption of innocence. He has stated he will not resign voluntarily and intends to continue governing until his official replacement occurs.
