Algeciras Port Authority investigates flooding causes

The Algeciras Port Authority (APBA) is investigating whether ongoing expansion works at the Galera dock and esplanade affected the drainage capacity of the Río de la Miel during recent torrential rains. The investigation is being conducted alongside the contractor and municipal technicians to determine the causes of flooding in areas including Avenida Virgen del Carmen and the rear of the Millán Picazo Auditorium.

The APBA noted that the river's final section features a concrete triple-frame channel with a 60-square-meter section, designed to handle intense rainfall. The authority suggested that the flooding, which occurred following rainfall of up to 120 liters per square meter, may have been exacerbated by the coincidence of high tide and a ‘dead tide’ phenomenon.
