Algeciras Port Hosts Maersk Hybrid Ships as Alternative‑Fuel Hub

The Port of Algeciras in southern Spain welcomed two Maersk container vessels equipped with dual‑fuel engines capable of running on conventional fuel and alternative fuels such as green methanol. The ships docked at the APM Terminals Algeciras facility, underscoring the port’s growing role as a Mediterranean hub for bunkering and the supply of low‑carbon marine fuels. Maersk’s strategy aims for net‑zero emissions by 2040, progressively adding large dual‑fuel vessels to its fleet. Algeciras has expanded its fuel offerings beyond traditional bunker oil to include LNG, bio‑fuels and increasingly methanol, supported by public and private investments, hybrid fuel barges, and electrification projects for berths. The development positions the port as a strategic platform for the maritime industry’s transition to decarbonised shipping.
