Algeciras port moves 41 million tonnes and ranked Europe’s most efficient hub

The Port of Algeciras recorded a total cargo movement of 41.3 million tonnes between January and May, slightly below the previous year’s level but marking a steady recovery after winter storm disruptions. May alone saw 9.2 million tonnes handled, a 3.1 % increase year‑on‑year, driven by a 5.7 % rise in imported containerized cargo and a 16 % jump in liquid bulk imports and exports.

The port was highlighted in the World Bank and S&P Global’s Container Port Performance Index 2025 as the most efficient container terminal in Europe and ranked 12th worldwide, reflecting an 11.8 % performance improvement over the prior year. Additional activity included a near‑10 % rise in passenger and vehicle movements ahead of the upcoming Strait of Gibraltar crossing operation, with 1.8 million passengers and 392,775 vehicles processed since the start of the year.

The Algeciras Bay Authority also approved the creation of the Blue Port Innovation Cluster, a public‑private partnership involving local government, university, and industry bodies to foster blue‑economy research, logistics innovation, and access to financing.
