Algeciras water bill increase sparks PSOE opposition

The Mancomunidad de Municipios del Campo de Gibraltar voted to approve a provisional amendment to the water‑treatment fee ordinance for Algeciras, raising the tariff by 15% and shifting billing from quarterly to bimonthly. The measure was supported by the Popular, La Línea, Los Barrios and San Roque groups, while the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), Izquierda Unida and Vox voted against it.

PSOE deputy Fran Fernández condemned the change as “una maniobra para tratar de camuflar la brutal subida del recibo del agua” and highlighted that Algeciras residents have already seen a 37% increase in water charges over the past two years. He described the proposal as an “atraco al bolsillo de los algecireños”. At the same meeting, the socialist representative from Los Barrios raised concerns about prolonged water‑supply cuts affecting the Santa Rosa district, urging faster communication from the water utility.

The amendment will still undergo a public‑information and hearing process before final adoption.
