Algeria advances strategic Alger-Tamanrasset railway corridor
Algerian Minister of Public Works, Abdelkader Djellaoui, has provided an update on the strategic 2,036 km railway corridor connecting Algiers to Tamanrasset. Of the total distance, 308 km are currently in service, including the section from Boughezoul to Laghouat which has been operational since October 2023.
The project is entering a significant new phase as 924 km of the corridor are being prepared for the launch of construction works. Additionally, 651 km are currently subject to calls for tender. The corridor is being developed in various stages, with sections such as Laghouat-Ghardaïa and Ghardaïa-El Meniaa in the preparation phase, while the In Salah-Tamanrasset stretch has been declared a matter of public utility.
The government aims to have the entire line in service by the end of 2028, focusing on the upcoming months to launch works on prepared sections and finalize contract awards for those currently under tender.
