Algeria advocates for African-led solutions to continental security crises
During the 10th edition of the ‘Amnesty Month in Africa’ held in Algiers, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf advocated for strengthened African mechanisms to manage continental crises. The event, organized under the theme ‘Silencing the Guns,’ focuses on promoting sustainable peace through the control of small arms and light weapons, as well as demining operations.
Attaf met with a delegation from the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC), led by the Ambassador of Benin, which holds the PSC presidency for September. Attaf emphasized the need for a ‘global and proactive’ approach to conflict prevention and resolution that addresses root causes. He specifically called for ‘African solutions to African problems,’ arguing that the continent should rely on its own mechanisms to handle security challenges and avoid foreign interventions that may exacerbate tensions or increase the arming of conflicting parties.
