Algeria and Italy reaffirm strategic partnership after phone call

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria spoke by phone with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on 27 July. The leaders reviewed and praised the “excellent” bilateral relations covering political, economic, energy and industrial cooperation.

They reaffirmed a commitment to deepen a strategic partnership described as one of the strongest between a European country and an African nation. Italy remains a major trading partner and investor in Algeria, especially in gas supplies that support Italy’s energy security, as well as in industry, infrastructure, training, agriculture, new technologies and innovation.

The conversation also highlighted progress on the Italy‑led “Mattei Plan” for Africa, noting advances such as the Enrico Mattei Centre of Excellence in Sidi Bel‑Abbès. Both heads of state expressed solidarity after the tragic fire at the Mohammadia children’s home in Algiers that killed ten children and a caregiver; Meloni conveyed condolences and Italy pledged support.
