Algeria and Morocco qualify for Women's World Cup after WAFCON wins
Algeria and Morocco have both secured places in the semifinals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and booked automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.
In their respective quarterfinal matches, Morocco defeated defending champions South Africa 2-1. Goals from Sakina Ouzraoui and Hanane Aït El Haj secured the win for the hosts, despite a late goal by South Africa's Thembi Kgatlana. Morocco will advance to a semifinal match against the winner of the Cameroon vs. Nigeria fixture.
Algeria achieved a historic first World Cup qualification after a 2-1 comeback victory against Ivory Coast. Following an early goal by Ines Konan, Ivory Coast's N’Sira Ouedraogo was sent off in the 41st minute. Algeria utilized the numerical advantage to secure second-half goals from Ines Khiri and Amira Ould Braham. Algeria will face the winner of the Ghana vs. Malawi match in the semifinals.
While Algeria and Morocco have qualified directly, Ivory Coast and South Africa still maintain a mathematical chance to reach the 2027 World Cup by competing in intercontinental playoffs.
