Algeria and Spain deepen strategic partnership as Spain backs Algeria's EU accord review

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited Algiers and described Algeria as a strategic partner and a trustworthy friend. He highlighted cooperation on security, illegal migration, cultural exchange and energy, noting that Algeria is Spain’s leading natural‑gas supplier and a bridge between Africa and Europe. During a joint press conference with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Sánchez affirmed Madrid’s readiness to work closely with Algeria.

President Tebboune asked Spain to use its influence within the European Union to support Algeria’s request to reopen negotiations on the 2002 EU‑Algeria partnership agreement. He emphasized the importance of Spain’s backing for energy cooperation, the recovery of smuggled funds, and joint efforts on security, migration, and judicial assistance. Both leaders referred to an upcoming eighth high‑level meeting slated for next autumn to further deepen bilateral ties.
