Algeria and Tunisia push for greater influence in global AI governance

Algeria is expanding its diplomatic agenda to place artificial intelligence at the centre of its foreign policy, seeking a stronger voice in the formulation of international AI standards. The government argues that emerging economies must help shape rules on data protection, algorithmic transparency and the balance between innovation and citizen safeguards, and is using the African Union as a platform to promote its positions.

At the Shanghai AI Summit 2026, Tunisia’s minister of communication technologies, Sofiane Hemissi, called for a worldwide AI governance framework built on transparency, equity and respect for human rights. He stressed the need to narrow the digital divide, protect personal data and ensure that AI development benefits all citizens, while outlining Tunisia’s own national AI strategy aligned with its 2026‑2030 development plan.
