Algeria appoints Antar Yahia as national team coach after World Cup exit

Algeria were eliminated 2‑0 by Switzerland in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup in Vancouver, ending their tournament campaign. Coach Vladimir Petkovic, whose contract had been extended to 2028, faced intense criticism from supporters and former players. Petkovic announced his resignation, citing the backlash.

The Algerian Football Federation swiftly moved to replace him, naming former international defender Antar Yahia as the new head coach. Yahia, who earned 53 caps between 2004 and 2012, has experience as a sporting director at US Orléans and USM Alger, and most recently coached Angers SCO’s reserve side. His first task will be to prepare the team for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Former star Rabah Madjer remarked that the loss was “logical” given Switzerland’s organization and highlighted tactical choices, such as the positioning of Ibrahim Maza, as factors in the defeat. The appointment of Yahia aims to restore stability and guide the Fennecs toward future continental competitions.
