Algeria approves troop deployment to Niger to protect oil assets

The Algerian parliament has approved the deployment of military units to Niger, marking the country’s first overseas mission since the 1973 war. The Council of the Nation (the upper house) voted unanimously for the deployment, and the People’s National Assembly (the lower house) subsequently provided its approval, fulfilling the two-thirds majority requirement mandated by Article 91 of the Algerian Constitution.

The mission is intended to secure oil and energy infrastructure in Niger, specifically protecting projects managed by the state energy company Sonatrach and its international subsidiary, SIPEX. Key assets include the Kafra oil field in northern Niger and the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, which aims to transport natural gas from Nigeria through Niger to Algeria.

The decision follows a recent visit to Algeria by Niger’s Defence Minister, General Salifou Modi, which resulted in a military cooperation protocol. Algerian officials have emphasized that the mission is a response to a request from Nigerien authorities and is focused on economic and strategic protection rather than combat operations.
