Algeria deploys aircraft to Niger amid regional instability

Algeria has deployed aircraft to Niamey following a period of unrest in Niger, where mutinous soldiers reportedly seized a military base near the capital and moved toward the presidential palace. This deployment follows months of Algeria deepening its involvement in the region, signaling a strategic shift toward managing instability along its southern border as a matter of regional deterrence rather than relying on external actors.

Despite the Nigerien military junta’s rhetoric of sovereignty and its break from international organizations like the International Criminal Court, the regime remains heavily dependent on foreign assistance. The government continues to rely on United Nations agencies, such as the UNDP, to fund essential infrastructure, education, and food supplies, with international aid accounting for more than 40% of the economy.
