Algeria deploys Su-30 fighter jets to Niger
Algeria has deployed Sukhoi Su-30MKA multirole fighter jets to Niamey, Niger, following a request from Nigerien authorities. The deployment, which included an Ilyushin Il-78 tanker aircraft, aims to strengthen airspace surveillance and security in the capital.
This military move follows a failed mutiny attempt against the military junta led by General Abdourahamane Tiani. While the internal clashes have concluded, the presence of Algerian heavy combat aircraft serves as a deterrent and signals regional support for the Tiani government.
This operation represents a significant escalation in Algerian security engagement within the Sahel. It follows previous military assistance from Algeria, which included the provision of helicopters and ammunition. Analysts suggest the move reinforces Algeria's role as an autonomous security actor in the region and provides strategic depth for southern Algerian territory.
