Algeria donates military helicopters to Niger

Algeria has donated four military helicopters and various combat support equipment to the Nigerien Armed Forces to strengthen Niamey's defense capabilities against armed groups in the central Sahel.

According to the Algerian Ministry of National Defence, the donation includes two Mi-24 SuperHind attack helicopters and two Mi-171 transport helicopters. The package also provides ammunition, spare parts, maintenance equipment, and logistical support. This transfer follows instructions from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to reinforce strategic bilateral military cooperation.

The move marks a significant improvement in diplomatic relations between Algiers and Niamey, which had deteriorated in early 2025 following border tensions involving a Malian drone. Relations began to stabilize in early 2026, highlighted by a visit from Nigerien leader General Abdourahamane Tiani to Algeria. The strengthening of ties occurs as Niger aligns more closely with the Russia-backed Alliance of Sahel States.
