Algeria donates military helicopters to Niger to bolster aerial capabilities

Algeria has transferred four Russian-origin helicopters to Niger to bolster the country's aerial combat and logistical capabilities amid a growing security crisis in the Sahel. The donation, authorized by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, includes two Mi-24V (Super Hind) attack helicopters and two Mi-171 tactical transport helicopters.

The aircraft, along with ammunition, spare parts, and maintenance equipment, were transported from the Algerian base in In Guezzam to Niamey via a C-130 military transport plane. The Mi-24V models are designed to provide close air support in desert and rugged terrain, while the Mi-171s serve as the backbone for troop transport, supply delivery, and medical evacuations.

This military support follows the withdrawal of Western forces from the region and aims to help the Nigerien army regain maneuverability and surveillance capabilities. Diplomatically, the move signals a normalization of relations between Algeria and Niger, aimed at fostering sustainable security cooperation to protect regional interests, including the trans-Saharan highway and gas pipeline projects.
