Algeria doubles fines for driving with worn tires
Under Algeria’s new traffic code, fines for driving with worn or smooth tires have doubled to 6,000 DA. This legislative change aims to increase driver accountability and improve road safety, particularly during the autumn rainy season.
Authorities, including the National Gendarmerie, have highlighted that worn tires significantly increase the risk of aquaplaning and longer braking distances by failing to effectively evacuate water from the road surface. The new regulations replace the previous fine of 3,000 DA established under older legal frameworks. Law enforcement will use tools to verify that tire tread depth meets the minimum legal requirements during roadside inspections to prevent accidents caused by loss of vehicle control.
