Algeria electricity demand hits record peak of 21,828 MW
Algeria has experienced a massive surge in electricity consumption due to a sustained heatwave, recording five historic demand peaks in just over a month. On Wednesday, August 19, at 2:30 PM, the national grid reached a new record peak of 21,828 MW, according to the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies.
This latest peak represents an increase of 1,200 MW compared to the previous record of 20,628 MW set in 2025. The Ministry identified the intensive use of air conditioning, particularly between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, as a primary driver of this spike. Other contributing factors include energy-inefficient buildings and state-subsidized electricity rates.
To manage the strain, Sonelgaz and its subsidiaries have mobilized technical teams to ensure service continuity. In response to the rising demand, the Ministry of Communication has launched a public awareness campaign to encourage more rational electricity consumption.
