South Sudan election readiness pledged amid AU and IGAD calls for stability

South Sudan is facing intense international pressure to establish a clear roadmap for national elections, currently anticipated for December 2026. During a virtual meeting of the African Union's High-Level Ad Hoc Committee (C5), President Salva Kiir assured regional leaders that legal preparations are complete, voter registration books have been printed, and the transitional unity government and parliament have been dissolved to facilitate the process.

However, regional leaders expressed significant concern regarding the stability of the transition. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, chairing the C5, emphasized that the 2018 peace agreement must remain the primary legal framework and warned against unilateral actions. Similarly, Djibouti President and IGAD Chairperson Ismail Omar Guelleh called for a consensus-based roadmap, noting that recent violence and political uncertainty threaten to undermine previous peace gains.

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune also addressed the summit, urging all signatories of the peace agreement to engage in inclusive political dialogue and prioritize national interest to ensure the upcoming elections can successfully transition the country away from conflict.
