Algeria eyes Russian tankers as India seeks French fighter partnership

Algeria is emerging as a likely purchaser of Russia’s new Il-78MK-90A aerial refuelling tanker. This follows the recent delivery of Su-57E stealth fighters to the country. While some speculation suggested a contract with China, aviation analysts point to Algeria, noting that the tanker’s desert-style colour scheme matches markings used by Algerian-linked aircraft. Reports indicate Algeria may have previously signed for three tankers with an option for three more to bolster air power against regional competitors.

Separately, India and France are deepening their strategic defence partnership by moving beyond traditional procurement toward joint technology development. The Indian Ministry of Defence has initiated efforts to participate in France’s Future Combat Air System (FCAS) sixth-generation fighter program. This shift follows the renewal of a decade-long defence cooperation agreement and aims to reduce India's reliance on Russian military equipment through advanced aerospace cooperation and engine projects.
