Algeria faces economic freedom and industrialization challenges

Algeria faces challenges in economic freedom and industrialization according to recent international indices. In the Legatum Prosperity Index 2026, Algeria ranked 114th globally in economic freedom, placing it 12th among Arab nations. This ranking follows a performance where the country secured 83rd place in the overall prosperity index, reflecting varied results across different pillars such as civil peace and opposition freedom.

Furthermore, the African Development Bank’s 2025 Industrialization Index highlights a gap in industrial development within the region. While Morocco has emerged as a leader in African industrial rankings, Algeria remains one of the continent's least industrialized and least diversified economies despite its significant hydrocarbon reserves. Analysts attribute this stagnation to state-dominated economic sectors, bureaucratic inertia, and historical policies such as the 51/49 ownership rule, which have impacted foreign investment and the ability to integrate into global supply chains.
