Algeria faces political transition amid regional shifts

Algeria faces significant internal and external political pressures as it navigates a shifting landscape in the Maghreb region. Following the appointment of Fatima Ezzarahra El Mansouri as Prime Minister of Morocco, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune finds himself positioned between the new Moroccan leadership and Tunisian Prime Minister Sara Zaafarani Zenzari.

Internally, Algeria struggles with a generational transition. While neighboring countries have undergone shifts following the Arab Spring, Algeria’s political structure remains heavily influenced by its military roots. With presidential elections not scheduled until 2029, the government faces the challenge of addressing the demands of the Hirak movement, particularly among the urban, educated youth demographic.

On the international stage, President Tebboune recently confirmed that the Algerian Air Force dispatched bombers to Niger in August to support the military junta following a coup attempt, highlighting Algeria's active role in regional security matters.
