Algeria forest fires cause heavy casualties and regional solidarity

Devastating forest fires in northeastern Algeria, particularly in the Jijel province, have resulted in significant loss of life and extensive material damage. While initial reports from the Algerian Ministry of Interior cited 12 deaths, local reports from the town of Djemaa Beni Habib indicate a much higher provisional toll, with some accounts suggesting up to 73 fatalities as search operations for missing persons continue.

The fires spread rapidly through forests, grazing lands, and agricultural crops, trapping families in their homes. In Djemaa Beni Habib, mass burials were held for dozens of victims following Friday prayers.

In response to the disaster, the foreign ministries of Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait have issued statements expressing solidarity with the Algerian government and people. These nations offered condolences to the victims' families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the fires.
