Massive forest fires in eastern Algeria, particularly in the Jijel province, have caused significant loss of life and property. While the Ministry of Interior initially reported 12 deaths, local reports and preliminary estimates suggest the toll has risen to 73 people, including a single family in the Beni Habibi highlands that reportedly lost 21 members.

Between August 27 and 28, a total of 174 fires were recorded across various regions. The General Directorate of Civil Protection has successfully extinguished 110 of these incidents, but 64 fires remain active in provinces including Jijel, Skikda, El Tarf, Guelma, Annaba, Bejaia, Bouira, Mila, Tebessa, and Constantine.

Extreme weather conditions, including temperatures approaching 50 degrees Celsius and strong winds, have hindered containment efforts. The fires have devastated forests, agricultural land, and orchards. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb attended a mass funeral for 39 victims in Djemaa Beni Habibi as search and rescue operations continue for those still missing.
