Algeria forest fires kill 73 people in Jijel province

Massive forest fires in eastern Algeria have resulted in a preliminary death toll of 73 people, primarily in the town of Djemaa Beni Habib within the Jijel province. During a mass funeral following Friday prayers, 39 victims were laid to rest in the presence of Prime Minister Saifi Gharib and local residents.

Reports indicate the fires spread with extreme speed, trapping families in their homes. In one instance, 21 members of a single family reportedly perished in the Beni Habib highlands. Many victims lost their lives while attempting to flee their residences or save livestock and crops.

The fires affected numerous areas across Jijel, including Tebeslan, Bordj Tahar, and Milia. The General Directorate of Civil Protection reported that out of 174 fires ignited between August 27 and 28, 110 have been extinguished. However, 64 fires remain active, including 20 in Jijel and others in Skikda, El Tarf, Guelma, Annaba, Bejaia, Bouira, Mila, Tebessa, and Constantine. Search operations for missing persons are ongoing, and authorities have noted extensive damage to vegetation, crops, and property.
