Algeria hosts heads of government from Mali and Niger

Algeria is hosting high-level diplomatic visits from the heads of government of Mali and Niger to strengthen regional ties and security cooperation in the Sahel.

Malian Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga visited Algiers on August 24, where he was received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The visit serves as a step toward normalizing relations between Bamako and Algiers following a period of tension after a Malian drone was downed by the Algerian military in April 2025. During the visit, Malian transitional president Assimi Goïta expressed his intent to conduct an official visit to Algeria at a later date.

Following the Malian delegation, Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine arrived in Algiers on August 26 with a ministerial delegation. The two-day working visit aims to consolidate a strategic partnership focused on economic development, social progress, energy, and infrastructure. Key discussions include regional stability, security cooperation, and combating transborder threats to ensure stability in West Africa.
