Algeria and China Baowu Group discuss green steel partnership

Algeria is exploring a major industrial partnership with China Baowu Group, a global leader in metallurgy, to revitalize its steel sector. Discussions between Algerian officials, including Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab, and the Chinese delegation focused on creating an integrated industrial complex dedicated to low-carbon direct reduced iron (DRI) and green steel production.

The project aims to leverage Algeria’s natural gas and renewable energy resources to implement advanced carbon capture and reduction technologies. The initiative is viewed as a strategic priority to modernize the El Hadjar steel complex in Annaba and develop a high-value-added industrial system. China Baowu has expressed readiness to transfer technical expertise and know-how to support this transition.

In addition to industrial developments, other regional news includes the expansion of Algiers International Airport, which has entered the top five African aviation hubs by seat capacity, and diplomatic efforts to normalize relations between Algeria and Mali following recent tensions.
