Algeria launches 50% train fare discount for retirees and online passport renewal for diaspora

The Algerian National Railway Company (SNTF) and the National Retirement Fund (CNR) have introduced the "Waqar" card, giving retirees a 50 % discount on all train tickets, including the Algeria‑Tunisia international line. The discount will take effect on 1 July 2026, aiming to make rail travel more affordable for older citizens.

On 24 June, Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud announced a digital platform that allows Algerian citizens abroad to renew biometric passports online. The service, demonstrated at the Algerian consulate in Paris, issued its first remotely‑renewed passport and will be expanded to other diplomatic missions. The platform promises secure 24‑hour access, reduced processing times and less pressure on consular offices.
