Algeria reconfigures regional geopolitics through new diplomatic pacts

Algeria is undergoing a significant geopolitical reconfiguration in the Maghreb region, according to analysis by the Spanish-language outlet Infobae. The country is pursuing new diplomatic alignments, notably strengthening ties with the United States, Mali, and Niger, while simultaneously severing relations with the United Arab Emirates.

A key component of this shift involves increased cooperation with Washington. Massad Boulos, a senior advisor to Donald Trump for Arab and African affairs, recently met with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in Algiers. During these discussions, Boulos described Algeria as a ‘close partner,’ with talks focusing on regional security and economic opportunities, particularly in the energy sector.

Algeria’s role as a major global gas exporter remains a central pillar of its foreign policy, especially regarding its supply to Spain. Additionally, Algiers is deepening its influence in the Sahel through closer cooperation with Bamako, Mali. On the European front, President Tebboune is expected to meet Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Madrid this October.
