African leaders convene in Egypt for NEPAD 25th anniversary summit

African leaders gathered in El Alamein, Egypt, for a summit marking the 25th anniversary of the NEPAD initiative. The summit, which included representatives from founding nations such as Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Africa, resulted in the adoption of the ‘Alamein Declaration’. This document emphasizes the need for accelerated economic integration, the strengthening of regional infrastructure, and the mobilization of domestic African savings and private sector investment to fund development projects.

During the summit, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal advocated for a development model driven by African financing and regional infrastructure. Similarly, President João Lourenço of Angola called for predictable funding to ensure AUDA-NEPAD can effectively implement the Agenda 2063 goals. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria highlighted Algeria’s role in continental integration through major projects like the Trans-Saharan road and gas pipelines, while urging a shift from planning to measurable results.

Separately, President Tebboune confirmed that Algeria deployed Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets to Niger in late August. He characterized the recent coup attempt in Niamey as a ‘provocation’ against Algeria, noting that the unrest occurred shortly after Niger’s Prime Minister visited Algeria.
