Algeria severs diplomatic ties with United Arab Emirates
Algeria has officially severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, citing a series of “provocative and hostile” actions by Abu Dhabi. The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it had exhausted all diplomatic channels to preserve bilateral ties before making the decision. The UAE expressed hope that the rupture would be temporary, emphasizing its commitment to the ties between the two peoples.
As part of the fallout, Algeria announced it will close its airspace to all UAE-registered civilian and military aircraft starting at midnight on September 11, 2026. An exception has been made for commercial civilian flights operating to and from Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers, which are permitted to continue until the end of 2026 when existing contracts expire.
The diplomatic breakdown follows years of mounting tension driven by divergent regional interests. Key points of friction include opposing stances on the Western Sahara dispute, differing views on the Sahel region, and the UAE’s normalization of relations with Israel, which Algeria opposes. Analysts suggest the move could significantly reshape strategic alliances across North Africa and the Middle East.
