Algeria severs diplomatic ties with United Arab Emirates

Algeria has officially severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, a decision President Abdelmadjid Tebboune described as irreversible. The rupture follows months of escalating tensions and what Algiers characterizes as hostile and interventionist actions by Abu Dhabi across North Africa, the Sahel, and West Asia.

In a series of statements, President Tebboune accused the UAE government of attempting to exert dominance and control over Algeria. He specifically cited concerns regarding UAE influence in regional conflicts, including Libya and Sudan. As part of the diplomatic break, Algeria has ordered the UAE ambassador to depart within 48 hours and has closed its airspace to Emirati aircraft, with the exception of commercial flights, through the end of 2026.

Separately, President Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s long-standing strategic friendship with Russia, noting that bilateral relations have remained strong for over 60 years.
